WW1 plastic surgery victims collection

I think FindmyPast (www.findmypast.co.uk) has adopted a policy of drip feeding out new collections every day!

The content supplier has just released a series of records for 2328 service personnel who received facial plastic surgery at the hands of Dr Harold Gillies from 1917-1925, at the Queen's Hospital in Sidcup, Kent.

Detailed medical notes are not revealed, just a summary of who was treated, where, when and why. A typical example concerns a David Smith, a 33 year old pensioned off sergeant with the 2nd battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment. The record states that he had a gunshot wound to his face, was wounded 30/9/1916, and gives regimental service number.

  1. It's always good to see some historical pieces about plastic surgery from different eras. Now we can compare how well they performed such delicate surgeries without the technological advantages we have now.
