Masters and Mates certificates online

I have to say, Ancestry has its moments! The group has just released a new collection of Masters and Mates certificates for Great Britain from 1850-1927, as sourced from The National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. I have in the last week been researching two merchant seamen from Fife, and both have popped up in the new database - one on four occasions, with first mate, masters and other certs, and the other as an only mate also. The collection is available at One thing to point out with these records - they look gorgeous, so get ready to buy a few frames!

Don't forget that both FindmyPast and The National Archives also have various merchant seamen collections online.

But nice one Ancestry!
