Irish probate

The National Archives of Ireland (www.nationalarchives.iehas a new catalogue up and running, and has uploaded probate calendars for the south from 1923-1982. The original version of the catalogue was virtually impossible to use, however, this has now been amended and works beautifully. As such, the previous user guide I had created on this page has now been removed, as there is thankfully no longer a need for it! To access the catalogue visit www.nationalarchives.ie/search-the-archives/

The annual summaries of wills are known as the Calendar of grants of probate of wills and letters of administration made in the Principal Registry and its district registries, with each year's entries looking something like the following:

Although the catalogue now works, it may still be easier to access them via the following direct links to the PDF files, as follows:

By the way, each of the files is fairly large - I have downloaded them all, and the size in total is 3.21GB.

Once a calendar entry has been identified, use the application form at the bottom of this page -www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/wills-testamentary-records/ - but bear in mind you can't pay online for the copy of the will or letter of adminstration, sadly.

For the probate calendars for all Ireland from 1858-1922, visit www.genealogy.nationalarchives.ie or https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1921305

Please note that the equivalent probate calendars for the district probate registries covering the counties of Northern Ireland, both before and after partition, from 1858-1965 are also available in database format at https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/information-and-services/search-archives-online/will-calendars

    Regards

    1. Hi Jim - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Court_of_Chancery_(Ireland) - it should give you an overview of the situation regarding Chancery north and south.

  3. Hi Chris - if you place these files on your Google Drive account you may find that Google Drive will automatically perform a full text search! Clearly this could be a powerful tool. I'd be interested in hearing if this works.
